Great review of a great game. I rented Max Payne 3 expecting to burn through the campaign in a couple of days and send it back to get the next game in my queue. Even though there were a few issues, I was blown away by the campaign (which I want to play again), but then I got addicted to the multiplayer. Good thing I don’t rent games from Redbox anymore; at a couple bucks a day this would add up quick. That’s why I’m grateful one of my coworkers at Dish talked me into giving Blockbuster @Home a try because I’ve saved a lot of money by not feeding those kiosks my credit card. Now I wish Rockstar would reboot Manhunt like this.

Reasons DmC will suck:1. All Ninja Theory's games have been mediocre at best.2. Tameem (creative doicetrr) has replaced one of the most iconic videogame characters ever with an emo-looking self-insert.3. The OTT fun style of Dante/DMC we all love has needlessly been replaced with an unwelcome serious tone.4. They're using the Unreal engine which isn't designed for DMC style games so it runs at 30fps instead of 60.5. The graphics are worse than DMC4 in every way. It's DMC2 all over again

I must be a rare breed, but I really don't like FF7. I played it, more than once (and can clear the game in just over 21hours), but I seriously don't rate it as one of the best games ever made... let alone as the best Final Fantasy ever made. The story was predictable, I didn't feel any kind of connection with the characters, the battles felt stiff, the game was rife with stereotyping, what the actual f@*~ was Cait Sith all about?... I could easily go on.

... and don't even get me started on the sequels, prequels and spin-offs. FF7 is certainly a cow that has been over-milked and left with saggy udders.

FF8 is the Final Fantasy game I hold most dear. Yes, it may have it's flaws (the Junctioning system kind of made you almost indestructible by the late stages of the game, and with enemies having seemingly endless magic to draw you never worried about running out) but, all those aside, I think it was a fantastic game.

People hang on to FF7s coat-tails for one reason, in my opinion: it was one of the biggest game they'd played before, and the FMVs were very pretty for it's time (but name me a Final Fantasy game that can't boast about that).

To Square Enix, I say this:
If you want to look back over previous games as inspiration, then give me a storyline and characters like in 8, with the DBS from 12, and the combat animation and imagery of 13.

An interesting article. I'll admit it and say that I loved Final Fantasy 7, but I'm not in the majority that's desperate for a remake. FF6 is an equally brilliant entry in the series, 8 was ok, FF9 is the last game in the series I enjoyed. After that, it's been one tedious entry after another, with two misfires into the MMO genre, and two spin-off sequels that I couldn't care less about.

I guess in that respect, it's easy to see why some uber-fans demand a return to FF7, as the FF's of today are vastly inferior. Just look at FF13. A terrible, nonsensical story (L Cie, Pulse L'Cie), boring characters, even the soundtrack is pretty forgetable.

A remake of FF7 isn't necessary. But with the boring direction the series is trudging in, I'd argue it may be time that 'Final' actually meant something these days...

Good points Chris. I suppose the flip side of the coin is that when games such as Chainsaw Lollipop are released with the sole intention of titillating gamers at the expense of seemingly everything else, it makes 'gamers' look immature. Or at least it does to the mainstream media who will focus more on these kind of games 'oh my god it's a cheer leader with massive you know what's and a chainsaw', 'oh my god what did she just say??', than say, looking at other articles on here, Okami that showcase how video-games have the potential, no sorry in many cases legitimately should, be classed as an art.

If I can reword and re-organise my moral panics article I shall edit that and include issues such as those you mention here.

Oh one last comment, this section has a tiny font I'm squinting like mad to try and type a valuable point rather than gibberish - that is all.

I've always had mixed views about the way women are portrayed in games; the industry seems to have a very tri-polar view with nothing in between. We have women that are objectified (Kasumi from DoA had each breast controlled by it's own engine), we have 'damsels in distress' a la Princess Peach, or we have women that are made from a combination of SAS training, more ammo than you can fit in your *ahem* and rhino hide... why can't we just have women?

On the subject of the game's content; the industry seem afraid to take games too close to the 'real world'. Everything has to be fantastical, flashy and big. I absolutely loved Heavy Rain for the down-to-earth and very real grit in the story. Why are games happy to portray war, but not happy to portray rape? Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling for graphic sexual assault scenes in games, but none of us would have a problem with it being included if it fit well with the story and wasn't done for shock factor.

I think the fault lays with the on-going problem of young gamers. Parents still see video games as a children's activity, and thereby seem not to take notice of the age ratings on games (I can guarantee you every 13 year old boy with a 360 or PS3 owns a CoD game), and studios are having to compensate for this. This may seem contradicted when we look at war games but, as war has been a big part of the past decade, people have become desensitised to it.

There are many problems in the gaming world and, for those of us who have done it all of our lives, it feels like they aren't being addressed. There are some AMAZING games out there, but a lot of the market is the same spoon-fed action catering for the modern market of gamers (the ones that want to shoot people and drive fast cars). Gaming has become too accessible. I'll stick with the industry to the end, it's the biggest part of my life, but I'm not happy with it right now.
